There was some concern among some homeowners recently, primarily in Hastings and South St. Paul, after it was learned that contaminants in their public water systems exceeded the EPA’s allowable drinking water standards.
How did this happen? The water quality didn’t change. The standards did. In April 2024, the EPA lowered the previously acceptable threshold for certain contaminants. Cities around Minnesota are taking action to bring their water systems into compliance with the new standards.
But while municipal water treatment facilities do a good job of providing clean, general purpose water, there are many miles of pipes between your home or business and the water treatment facility. Along the way, it’s been proven there is ample opportunity for the water to pick up unintended contaminants. This is where the importance of a whole home water treatment system comes in.
There is more you can do. You can add final barrier protection. Haferman Water Conditioning enables you to get even purer, better tasting water for your family.
Background on the EPA’s first-ever National Primary Drinking Water PFAs Regulation
The EPA’s new regulations are the first national standards limiting the amount of forever chemicals found in drinking water. Public water utilities are now required to test for six types of these man-made chemicals, or PFAs. This is due to their potential health risks.
What are Forever Chemicals?
Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAs) have been used extensively for decades in various industrial applications and consumer products, including everything from microwave popcorn and Teflon cookware to personal care products including cosmetics and skin cleansers.
PFAs are often called forever chemicals because some accumulate over time in people, animals and the environment and do not break down naturally for hundreds or even thousands of years.
You can do more to help protect your family
Standards accepted by the EPA and local municipalities are not as high as Haferman Water Conditioning’s standards. We stand behind the Kinetico K5 Drinking Water System as the most highly certified drinking water solution on the market. Why settle for less than a Whole Home water treatment system that can filter even more PFAs, Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS) as well as personal care products, pharmaceuticals, endocrine disrupting compounds and other contaminants that may be present in both our local well and city water?
For example, in 2019 the Kinetico K5 Drinking Water System received the new NSF/ANSI-58 PFOS/PFOA Certification for its ability to reduce PFOS and PFOA by 99%. This is on top of other certifications — NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 372, as well as CSA Standard B483.1 — covering the reduction of dozens of common contaminants.
